Kendra Rieger – Rising Star Graduate Student Award

April 7, 2016

Kendra Rieger (1)

Nursing Instructor, Kendra Rieger RN BN PhD(c), has been named the 2016 recipient of the Canadian Association for Nursing Research (CANR) Rising Star Graduate Student Award! The award is presented to both an outstanding Masters and outstanding Doctoral nursing students. Kendra will receive the award for her doctoral work at the University of Manitoba in recognition of her research excellence. Presented biennially, Kendra will officially receive her award on May 2nd 2016 at the College of Nursing Researcher in Residence Event.

The Nursing department would like to recognize Kendra not only for this award but for her immense commitment to research. Kendra is currently working on her PhD in Nursing at the College of Nursing at the University of Manitoba. She is part of the first cohort of Nursing PhD students in the province of Manitoba. Kendra’s devotion to research is evident in her scholarly activities. As primary author or co-author, she has nine accepted, in press, or published publications and two additional publications currently under review. While all her publications are important to her, two pivotal publications are “Arts-based learning: An analysis of the concept for nursing education” published in the International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship (see full reference below) and “The effectiveness and experience of arts-based pedagogy among undergraduate nursing students: A mixed methods systematic review,” which is currently under review (see full reference below). This work is pivotal to Kendra because it is a core part of her doctoral thesis and she hopes to build on it as she continues to research arts and health. She hopes to develop a program of research about arts and health initiatives including but not limited to creative approaches to teaching and learning. Kendra is also very interested in systematic reviews and hopes to continue to develop her expertise in this methodology.

Kendra began her love for research as a young child as she always wanted to be a scientist. As she continued her education and practice as a nurse, she fell in love with research, realizing that she likes to “think this way.” Her devotion to research is not only based on a personal love for it but also a genuine belief in its importance to nursing care and education. She is a firm believer in evidence informed practice, which integrates the best research evidence with patient preferences, clinical context, and the nurse expertise in that particular setting to give the best patient care possible.

Kendra hopes that nurses and nursing students will see the practical applications of research and writing. She contends that writing is an important part of scholarship in Nursing. To students who may not see its relevance, she says “Don’t underestimate the importance of communicating research in writing.” She also understands that writing does not come easily to everyone. Kendra says, “I struggled with self-confidence in writing but I think you can learn to become a good writer with diligence and mentorship.” She strongly emphasizes the mentorship aspect and has personally written with many of her professors, including her doctoral advisor, reiterating that “everyone time I write with someone, I learn from them.”

The CANR Rising Star Graduate Student Award is more than just recognition for all of Kendra’s hard work. She hopes it will help encourage other nurses and nursing students to get involved in research. Kendra also hopes it will bring awareness to the CANR as a great opportunity for nurses to connect with other researchers. As an associate member of the Canadian Nursing Association (CNA), the CANR is open to all nurses (for a small fee) and provides members with opportunities for funding, awards, and networking.

Kendra would like to thank the CANR and her advisor, Dr. Wanda Chernomas, for nominating her for this award.

On behalf of the Public Relations Committee and the Nursing Department, congratulations Kendra and thank you for your commitment to research!

BIT Instructor Presents at the 2016 Wiley Accounting Workshop

March 15, 2016

On Friday, March 4th, 2016, the 2016 Wiley Accounting Workshop was held in Vancouver, British Columbia.  The workshop, which was sponsored by Wiley and CPA Canada, saw over 80 participants including educators from academic institutions across western Canada.

The workshop featured Valerie Warren and Red River College instructor Lori Novak who shared the results of a survey of accounting students across Canada on their readiness for and challenges faced in their accounting courses. The presentation challenged the audience to put themselves in the position of their students and to try to understand the challenges communicated by the students who participated in the survey.

The presentation was followed by discussion with other instructors as well as with students from Kwantlen Polytechnic University who were attending the workshop. After the discussions, ideas were presented for overcoming the challenges that students expressed in the survey.

loriBookLori Novak is the co-author of the accounting textbook, Accounting Principles Seventh Canadian Edition, Volume 1 and Volume 2 which was published in November of 2015 and March of 2016 respectively.

Professional Development Workshops

February 24, 2016

Professional Development Workshops

As part of the implementation of the E-Portfolio to students in the Accounting and Computer Education department we will be developing professional development workshops. Every week there will be two hours included in the student’s schedule for professional development and every semester will focus on how the students can expand and modify their portfolio as they learn new skills. By establishing regular classroom sessions students will be given direction on the creation and maintenance of their portfolio in both a group setting and individually. The importance of these workshops will be to prepare students for their co-op and industry project work terms and ultimately their job search for full time employment.

In the first semester students will be learning about what a portfolio is, how to create it, what to include in it and how to document their learning. At the beginning of each subsequent semester students will be taught how to reflect on their learning from their previous semester and include examples of the skills that they developed in and out of school. In the second semester the focus will be developing and enhancing their portfolio further and preparing for an industry mock interview.

In addition to the E-Portfolio students will be learning job search skills, cover letter and resume preparation, interview skills as they prepare for co-op. Students will be able to reflect on and get feedback on the co-op process as they apply for jobs and experience industry interviews. During their work term and upon return for their final semester students can use this time to add relevant skill sets to their portfolio and document their learning. In their final semester students will reflect on their overall learning, academically and from industry to modify their portfolio into a document that will impress employers.

As you have seen in previous blogs we are currently training to be able to show learners how to use an E-Portfolio and build it through Mahara. There are 8 staff members from the ACE department that are among those taking an 8 week course in E-Portfolios. We are looking to implement the concept of E-Portfolios to the Business Technology Management students in the second half of this semester. Then we will begin the Professional Development workshops in September for both the current BTM students and the new intake in the fall.

Bruce Gillespie was an instructor at Red River College from 1989 until illness in 2007 left
him unable to continue teaching. Bruce left this mortal world in the spring of 2008 at the age of 57.

Over the course of his two decades at RRC, he crossed paths with hundreds of aspiring graphic designers, as a teacher, mentor, big brother and friend. In addition to teaching, Bruce is best remembered by most people for his encyclopedic knowledge of music, for his incredible album collection, and his own musical ability.

Application for the award is in the form of a poster that reflects on the marriage of music and art; collecting, giving, sharing, remembering and passion.
