7deb5b6f-0681-4212-b937-a8305da65059We have just started into another iteration of the Business Information Technology (BIT) industry project course. We hope to continue giving students great learning opportunities building solutions from inception to delivery where all the things that can happen on a project – can and do happen.

I have found that some of the most valuable learning experiences that come out of project are born from, as one instructor described, “chaos in learning.” The unexpected will occur, assumptions that you made about the products you are creating turn out to be wrong, technology doesn’t co-operate, and communicating and dealing with your project team turns out to be harder than you thought. The students have to deal with all of this, and have the added pressure of interacting with and delivering to a real-world client. All of these aspects give the students the learning experiences that we can’t give them in the confines of a usual classroom setting.

Where are they now? Internationally Educated Nursing Graduates share their stories: Featuring Michelle and Jay Zarzoso

January 14, 2016

image1Michelle and Jay graduated from the Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Nurses (BPIEN) Program in 2011. Michelle has been working at St. Boniface Hospital for 4 years now mainly in Cardiac Sciences Program (CCU Coronary Care Unit; Cardiology; Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Unit). She also works in Acute Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Family Medicine and Transitional Care Unit at times.

After graduating, Jay worked as a Central Float Nurse in Deer Lodge Center for 2 years then moved to St. Boniface Hospital where he now works in Geriatric Medicine, Family Medicine and Transitional Care Unit.

Michelle and Jay share a bit about their unique journey from student to RN:

Everything was not easy. You need to sacrifice a lot to reach your dream.

My husband and I went to school together and this made things so tight financially. No fancy clothes. No restaurants or presents for our anniversary. No vacations. Instead, we spent hours in school and library. We lined up for the Food Bank.

Now, we get to help others in need. We are HAPPY nurses who get to touch people’s lives. We get to help patients in the recovery period or in the dying process.

Their final message to students in the thick of their studies right now?

HARD WORK pays off!

Holiday Harvest 2015 Was a Giant Success!!

December 23, 2015

The 16th Annual Holiday Harvest came to an end on Friday, December 11, 2016.

We had a record breaking year with the donations, thanks to the time and commitment from all students and staff members. (Clap! Clap! Clap!) Your influence and support makes a tremendous difference. As students, you’ve gained more than just a chance of winning a free breakfast. You just helped to build a sense of responsibility to help your community, and you worked together for a collective cause. You should be proud of your amazing accomplishment!

As mentioned previously, the academic classes who bring in the most donated goods are awarded with a delicious breakfast, along with the chair and dean.
This year, the winning classes are:

First Year – C4
Second Year – Municipal
Third Year – ***CMD***
Fourth Year – CMD

***CMD Third Year Students earned a breakfast because of their ingenious strategy. They managed to collect over $1200.00 in donations.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU goes out to:

• All of the students who so generously donated hamper items
• Robin for calling the Salvation Army for the Holiday Harvest families,
• Louise for collecting and tabulating the donations,
• Cody, Dylan, Denis, Margaret, Val, Louise, Patricia and NIcky for organizing the food hamper donations,
• Louise and Patricia for purchasing last minute perishables and missing gifts,
• Margaret and Carrol for letting us use their office space to store gifts and food items during the first half of December,
• Denis and Dylan for delivering the baskets to the families on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. The hampers were well received, and the families showed great appreciation.

Denis and Dylan were also sent off with warm hugs and best wishes, and the families asked them to pass on their gratitude to everyone involved in this act of kindness.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ANOTHER GENEROUS YEAR OF DONATING TO THOSE THAT ARE LESS FORTUNATE.

Here’s wishing each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year!

“When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.”
