ACE Project Space

Business Analysis

Business analysis involves working as a liaison among project stakeholders in order to understand the structure, policies and business processes of an organization and to recommend and support the development of solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals.

We owe the success of the many projects completed at the ACE Project Space to the business analysis work performed by our Business Technology Management (BTM) students.

What We’re Doing

Using a collaborative approach, our students are identifying client needs and working with their teams on building technology solutions that solve their clients’ business problems.

On every project in the ACE Project Space, our BTM students use a proven agile methodology that involves facilitating meetings with clients and Business Information Technology (BIT) students.

Our BTM students meet with clients regularly to understand their clients’ business needs and processes, determine user personas, gather requirements and verify that the solution built by the team reflects clients’ expectations. The BTM students model current business processes, perform gap analyses and then propose new processes that address the gaps found.

The BTM and BIT students work together to design a solution that supports the new processes. Once the solution design is approved by the client, the students develop and test the selected solution features and ensure the solution works as designed. After the client performs user acceptance testing, the team releases the features that passed the user tests.

Expertise

Our students, faculty and staff have the skills to uncover and understand the needs of an organization and to propose solutions that meet business goals.

Student Expertise

Through the BTM program, students gain the basic skills required to gather and analyze business requirements and to prepare and validate solutions with clients. For every project at the ACE Project Space, students prepare a number of artifacts associated with business analysis, including use cases, personas, story maps, business process network diagrams and wireframes.

Faculty and Staff Expertise

Our faculty and staff have the industry experience and knowledge of business analysis to instill business analysis best practices among students. Our instructors provide students with basic skills in project management, enabling students to propose project solutions, and then lead teams to successful project delivery.

Methodology

Every term, BTM students manage each project using a consistent and proven agile methodology that blends the business analysis and project management disciplines. They apply the Scrum framework, which is a subset of the agile methodology, to ensure the project succeeds.

Together, students work through the following high-level steps:

  • Create a project charter
  • Gather business requirements for the project
  • Develop personas
  • Prepare an agile sprint schedule based on Scrum
  • Develop and adhere to a communication plan
  • Perform business process mapping
  • Develop wireframes to assist with development
  • For each sprint:
    • Establish stories and story maps with clients
    • Communicate stories to the development team
    • Perform UI/UX testing
    • Create test cases
    • Perform system testing
    • Perform the sprint review
