J. David Garriock, Business Administration, 1967

David Garriock

After graduating from RRC Polytech’s Business Administration program in 1967, David began his working career with Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1970, he went to work for Olympic Pant and Sportswear, and in 1976, David joined his father’s business, Garriock Insurance (formerly a partnership called Sheps-Garriock Insurance). As a result of David’s hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, Garriock Insurance has grown 13 times in size, while the staff has increased to 20 Licensed Brokers. Today, the company is run by his three children. David is a sought-after guest speaker, and a chosen educational lecturer within the Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba.

David Bergen

David is a graduate of RRC Polytech’s Creative Communications program (1980), and also earned Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees at the University of Winnipeg. A noted author, David has published four novels: A Year of Lesser (1996), See The Child (1999), The Case of Lena S. (2002), and The Time In Between (2005). David became the first writer from Western Canada to earn the country’s top prize for fiction, when he received the 2005 Scotiabank Giller Prize for The Time In Between. David has received numerous literary awards and also served as writer-in-residence at Winnipeg Centennial Library (2002-03).

RRC Polytech campuses are located on the lands of Anishinaabe, Ininiwak, Anishininew, Dakota, and Dené, and the National Homeland of the Red River Métis.

We recognize and honour Treaty 3 Territory Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, the source of Winnipeg’s clean drinking water. In addition, we acknowledge Treaty Territories which provide us with access to electricity we use in both our personal and professional lives.
