Building Efficiency TAC

Facilities and Equipment

BETAC offers services both in-house and in the field to better serve your challenges and needs. Have a solution you want to test? Would you like us to go to your construction site or building? We have the right solution for you.

Facilities

Centre for Applied Research in Sustainable Infrastructure

The Centre for Applied Research in Sustainable Infrastructure (CARSI) offers facilities for testing mock-ups and assemblies for air, water, structural and thermal performance during design and pre-construction phases, as well as pre-certification testing of product prototypes.

Other RRC Polytech Facilities

RRC Polytech has multiple labs and educational facilities that could support BETAC’s project and operations, including MotiveLab™ — a 7,000-square-foot research facility with a large-scale climatic chamber. To find out more about RRC Polytech’s facilities, contact us.

Equipment

Environmental Chamber

BETAC has access to two sets of environmental chambers to evaluate thermal performance of windows, doors and mock-up wall systems — one medium-scale set of two side-by-side chambers and another large-scale chamber.

Air, Water and Structural Chamber

Air, water and structural (AWS) testing takes what can be costly guesswork out of the process of enhancing the building envelope components and assemblies. BETAC’s AWS chamber is intended to stimulate innovation in the design and construction of building envelopes.

Heat Flow Meter

This is a practical method to measure thermal conductivity and resistance of construction materials, insulation products and assemblies. With this equipment, the measurement of thermal conductivity indicates a material’s heat conductivity capacity, which is a key component to assess a building’s energy efficiency and thermal performance.

Whole Building Airtightness

The point of whole building airtightness testing is to increase building durability while lowering operating costs. Long recognized as valuable in residential properties, whole building air leakage testing is yet to be widely adopted in commercial buildings.

CAN-BEST Smart-Lab

The CAN-BEST Smart-Lab is a portable research and testing apparatus for air, water and structural testing of windows and doors.

Flexible, Multi-channel Data Acquisition System

Meeting special requirements of mobile testing, this system contains programmable amplifiers and anti-aliasing filters for sensors. It contains flexible interfaces for a variety of analog and digital signals.

Infrared Camera – FLIR T1020SC Thermal Camera

The FLIR T1020 thermal camera is a portable, high speed, high definition infrared camera designed to capture stunning thermal images and precise temperature measurement either in the field or in the lab. The T1020 is capable of capturing lossless radiometric imagery at 30 Hz up to 240 Hz. The T1020 is calibrated to measure object temperatures from -40 °C to 2000 °C. When using the FLIR ResearchIR Max software, we can easily view, record, analyze and share data with project partners. The T1020 includes a standard lens, a wide angle lens and a close up lens.

YESAIR 8-Channel IAQ Monitor

The YESAIR 8-channel Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Monitor is a portable air quality and data logging instrument for intermittent or continuous air quality monitoring. The YESAIR IAQ monitor that BETAC purchased is configured for common pollutants that affect IAQ which include temperature, humidity, relative humidity (RH), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen (O2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter. The YESAIR IAQ Monitor will be a key tool to better understand IAQ issues and benchmark improvement techniques in residential, commercial, hospital, school and airport applications.

NTi-Audio Acoustic Measurement Equipment

BETAC purchased acoustic measurement equipment from NTi-Audio that includes sound level meters, a dodecahedron speaker, a tapping machine, a façade speaker and reporting software. This equipment is capable of conducting ASTM E336 (field measurement of airborne sound attenuation between rooms in buildings), ASTM E966 (field measurements of airborne sound attenuation of building façades and façade elements) and ASTM E1007 (field measurements of tapping machine impact sound transmission). This equipment is capable of measuring sound pollution (either airborne noise or impact noise) from adjacent spaces or exterior sources and can be utilized for the benefit and wellbeing of people in the commercial and residential sectors.
