Welcoming Week Message from Fred Meier, President & CEO of RRC Polytech

September 12, 2022

As we start to settle in and feel more comfortable with our daily routines, I encourage you to embrace the College’s culture of caring for one another and ensure that everyone both virtually and on campus continues to feel welcome and valued.

Diversity is one of our greatest strengths because it’s our differences that often teach us the most. We are so fortunate to bring together students and staff from a wide collection of backgrounds, cultures and beliefs, making our College community an incredible resource from which to learn.

Our commitment to inclusion guides us to seek opportunities to involve all of these unique sources of information in ways that are meaningful to them and helps to develop better strategies to interact with each other moving forward.

This week we will be holding some special events and activities to celebrate international students, immigrants and all newcomers to Canada who have chosen to further their education at RRC Polytech.

From September 9 to 18, RRC Polytech and the Language Training Centre are participating in Welcoming Week to promote inclusion and belonging. It’s the 10th anniversary of what is now a global event, and the third year Canada is participating nationally.

Building confidence and developing a sense of belonging is essential to long term success and we want all students to know that sharing their culture, language and unique experiences enriches life on campus for everyone and we appreciate their contribution to the College community.

Welcoming Week also allows us to showcase the benefits of our partnerships in the community, and with local and Federal government, which enhance learning opportunities and break down barriers to access and participation for international students, newcomers and refugees.

A prime example is RRC Polytech’s Language Training Centre, a hub for helping newcomers achieve success in their fields, while bringing great impact to Manitoba’s communities. Its home at Manitou a bi Bii daziigae in the heart of Winnipeg, is convenient and accessible for learners and offers so much more beyond an opportunity to learn English. The supportive and energetic staff have created a dynamic learning environment that also connects students with their community and the supports they need to reach their education and career goals.

Our partners in industry are in need of skilled workers and we are eager to prepare the next generation of leaders. By offering a welcoming, collaborative environment RRC Polytech is attracting the best and the brightest to learn, work and live in Manitoba.

During Welcoming Week, we invite you to share your success stories, compete in fun activities for prizes, pose for photos, and explain who you are, why you’re here and the many reasons you’re proud of where you’re from. Use the hashtag #WelcomingWeek2022 on social media to have your message included in the national campaign. The goal of this initiative is to create a greater mutual understanding of the needs of others and an uplifting atmosphere to work and learn in.

We are committed to ensuring our College community reflects Manitoba’s diverse population and welcomes the valuable perspectives of people from around the world.

Be kind. Be curious. Be open.

Fred
