November 16: The Anniversary of the Death of Louis Riel

November 17, 2022

137 years ago, Louis Riel was executed for high treason on November 16, 1885. Today, we remember him as a leader and trailblazer of Métis rights. We commemorate his dedication to carving out a place for Métis people in Canada and want to take this opportunity to acknowledge Métis peoples’ historical and modern contributions to Canadian society.

To learn more about Louis Riel and the Métis people, watch The Métis in Canada or check out the many resources available through RRC Polytech’s Library OneSearch.

RRC Polytech campuses are located on the lands of Anishinaabe, Ininiwak, Anishininew, Dakota, and Dené, and the National Homeland of the Red River Métis.

We recognize and honour Treaty 3 Territory Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, the source of Winnipeg’s clean drinking water. In addition, we acknowledge Treaty Territories which provide us with access to electricity we use in both our personal and professional lives.
