December 11, 2024

On October 26 and 27, 2024, RRC Polytech’s Centre for Newcomer Integration (CNI) partnered with the Manitoba Moose to offer students and their families an unforgettable introduction to a cornerstone of Canadian culture: live hockey. Thanks to the generosity of the Manitoba Moose, CNI received 40 complimentary Community Zone tickets—20 for each game and offered additional tickets at a discounted rate of $10 each, significantly reduced from the regular price of $38. For many, it was their first live hockey experience, and the games offered a unique window into a sport deeply embedded in Canada’s identity.

For Olena Tymofiieva, originally from Ukraine, the evening was nothing short of extraordinary. “It was an exhilarating evening that immersed me in Canadian hockey culture,” she said. “It was my first live hockey game in Canada, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The electric atmosphere, chants, and fans’ enthusiasm made it an unforgettable night.”

Attending with her husband, Olena described how the event gave her a better understanding of the community’s passion for hockey and the camaraderie it inspires. “Witnessing the community’s passion for hockey firsthand was incredible.

The game provided a unique glimpse into Canadian culture, showcasing the country’s love for hockey and camaraderie. I appreciated the opportunity to experience this integral part of Canadian identity!”

For others, like Carola Ortiz Fancelli, the evening offered both excitement and curiosity. Attending with her husband, Carola admitted she’s still learning the rules of the game but was captivated by the physicality and speed of the players. “I liked the toughness and the way the players crashed into the walls. A lot of adrenaline. It’s amazing how they can skate, move around so fast and play at the same time. I can barely hold my balance on ice,” she said with a laugh.
