Holiday Generosity Shines at CNI and Christmas Cheer Board Hamper Event

December 23, 2024

The spirit of the holiday season was alive and well at RRC Polytech’s Centre for Newcomer Integration (CNI) as students and their families received Christmas Cheer Board hampers filled with warmth and care. The two-day distribution event on November 25 and 26 brought together volunteers, staff, and students, to distribute over 300 hampers, creating a sense of unity and generosity that defines the holiday spirit.

Each hamper included non-perishable food and gifts for families and children. These carefully prepared hampers help newcomers enjoy the holidays. One recipient said, “We finally feel like it’s Christmas time coming to our home,” showing how much these gifts mean to them.

Families spoke of their children’s excitement and anticipation: “The kids are especially excited about the Christmas presents! Although they haven’t opened them yet, they’re eagerly looking forward to the surprises inside.”

Volunteers, many of them international students from the Intensive English for International Students (IEIS) program at CNI, said the event was filled with warmth, unity and a genuine sense of community. They described the positive energy and generosity on display as they assisted with the distribution of hampers, which included gifts and other items to help newcomers experiencing financial challenges enjoy the holidays.

“Some didn’t expect the hampers to be so large and weren’t prepared to carry them,” said  Bennet, an IEIS volunteer student. “Not to worry though, we were prepared and happy to help them transport the gifts to their cars or classrooms.”

The distribution of these hampers was made possible through the help of community partners. Red River Messenger Courier delivered the hampers from the Christmas Cheer Board office to the college’s Exchange District Campus. Jordan Kowerko, the Sales Manager at Red River Messenger Courier, even helped carry the hampers from the loading docks to the Roundhouse in the Manitou a bi Bii daziigae building. The Kildonan-East Rivers hockey team also pitched in, making it easier for recipients to bring their hampers home.

Recipients expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting how the hampers helped them feel like Christmas had truly arrived. One family’s children eagerly anticipated the surprises inside, while another recipient said the hamper brightened the end of their year during difficult times.
