Volunteer Opportunity: Nuit Blanche Winnipeg

  • Are you looking for an opportunity to practice your English language skills outside of the classroom?
  • Do you want to become part of the the biggest contemporary arts and culture celebration in Manitoba?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, consider volunteering with Nuit Blanche Winnipeg.

Nuit Blanche Winnipeg (NBW) is a free evening exploration and celebration of contemporary art that takes place on the opening Saturday of Culture Days. Held annually since 2010, the events and exhibits attract thousands of people to Downtown, The Forks, St Boniface, and the Exchange District. NBW 2023 will take place on Saturday, September 23rd.

Anishinabe Days: July 29- July 30

The 2nd Annual Anishinabe Days Celebration, hosted by the Treaty One Nations, brings together members from across the Nations at Naawi-Oodena for a weekend filled with exciting activities.

Dates and Times:

  • July 29 @ 8:30 am – July 30 @ 4:30 pm

Location:

  • Naawi-Oodena in the 500 Block of Kenaston Boulevard

Events include:

  • Traditional Pow Wow
  • Anishinabe Idol Talent Show
  • Free kids’ activities
  • Fireworks on Saturday night

Free Event: Folklorama Kick-Off

For two weeks in July and August, Winnipeg is home to Folklorama, the largest and longest-running multicultural festival of its kind in the world!

On Saturday, July 29th, join Folklorama in kicking off the 2023 Folklorama Festival at the Lyric Theatre at Assiniboine Park, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.

This is a free event that offers fun for the whole family. Activities include:

  • interactive children’s activities
  • cultural demonstrations and workshops
  • a live show featuring cultural performing groups

Free Event: Ballet in the Park

Ballet in the Park is a Winnipeg summer tradition that you don’t want to miss! At this FREE event, you can experience the beauty and artistry of the world-renowned Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

  • Where: The Lyric Theatre at Assiniboine Park
  • When: Wednesday, July 26th, Thursday, July 27th and Friday, July 28th at 7:30pm
  • What to Bring: Lawn chairs, cushions, and/or blankets to sit on; snacks and water

STEP – Training and Work Experience in Administration or Hospitality

The Support Towards Empowerment Program (STEP) is a new training and work experience program for women and non-binary folks who are interested to work in either the hospitality sector, or in administrative/clerical roles. Folks who are selected will complete 15 days of training as well as a 6 month paid work placement. Childminding will be available during the training.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Women and non-binary folks (18+)
  • Must be a current recipient of EIA (Employment and Income Assistance)/ Welfare

The Centre for Newcomer Integration (formerly the Language Training Centre) is proud to recognize the achievements of 27 deserving students with the English Speaking Union and Powerland Computers Awards.

The English Speaking Union awards were given to students who demonstrated academic excellence, reflected by competency in all aspects of language development. As recipients of this award, these students have shown a commitment to developing their English language skills while contributing to a positive learning environment.

The Powerland Computer awards were given to students who have a background in, or have demonstrated a particular interest in, the field of Information Technology and have been nominated by their instructor.

Congratulations to all of the winners! We wish you continued success in your language learning and settlement journey.

Free Admission to the Manitoba Museum: July 7

The Manitoba Museum is now offering free admission on the first Friday of every month from 5 pm to 9 pm. Drop-in tours, pop-up concerts and hands-on activities will be available throughout the evening.

General admission is free to all three of the Museum’s core attractions – the Museum Galleries, the Science Gallery, and the Planetarium.
