Learn to select, set up, configure and calibrate sensors, controllers and actuators to start a successful career in the instrumentation and control engineering field.
Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology is a specialization program. Students interested in this program must apply to and complete the first common year of the Electrical Engineering Technology program.
The Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology program develops the in-depth knowledge and skills you need to control and automate operations in the manufacturing and resource industries.
Through this program, you’ll explore data acquisition, networking, distributed control systems and remote terminal units. You’ll also learn the configuration/programming language of various microprocessor-based devices.
As part of your RRC Polytech education, you’ll gain practical industry experience through a co-op work experience. This co-op opportunity will help you build relevant work experience, integrate your previous learning and create connections with industry partners and employers.
As an Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology graduate, you’re eligible for apprenticeship recognition under the Red Seal trade of Instrumentation and Control Technician. RRC Polytech’s experiential lab sessions provide credit hours for field experience requirements, and classes are recognized as equivalent to the four levels of apprenticeship schooling.
After completing Electrical Engineering Technology’s first common year (Terms 1 to 3), you can choose to specialize in Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology. Through this program, you’ll develop the technical skills needed for a successful career in automation and process control.
Develop fundamental knowledge in control theory, fluid mechanics, programmable logic controllers (PLC), measurements, electrical systems, microcontrollers and project management.
Expand your understanding with advanced topics in thermodynamics and robotics, advanced PLC, networking, process measurements, control systems and control loop tuning.
Complete a co-op term focused on Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology to further develop your work experience and grow your professional network.
Complete a final group project and report to showcase your work while exploring networking, distributed process control, chemical instrumentation, programming and further electrical systems.
Excel with practical learning and experienced instructors, all focused on your success. With an employer-driven education, you won’t just be ready for a career – you’ll be prepared to stay in front of what’s ahead.
