Update regarding recent federal changes impacting international students
On September 18, 2024, the Government of Canada announced further changes to the immigration programs, particularly affecting international students and temporary workers. We understand that news like this can create uncertainty and concern, which is why we are reaching out to provide you with the information we have so far, as well as details we are still awaiting from IRCC.
At this point, we can confirm that any student with a valid study permit or who has applied for a study permit before November 1, 2024, will be grandfathered under the previous post-graduate work permit (PGWP) eligibility requirements.
If you are applying for your PGWP after November 1, 2024, one proposed change is the need to complete an English language assessment, scoring at least CLB 5, when applying for your PGWP. While we do not yet have confirmation, we wanted to provide you with this information in advance so you can prepare.
It may be beneficial to book your test early, as high demand from students across Canada could make it difficult to schedule. The approved language tests include:
- CELPIP: Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program
- You must take CELPIP – General test
- IELTS: International English Language Testing System
- You must take the IELTS General Training option
- PTE Core: Pearson Test of English
- You must take the PTE Core option
Your test scores are valid for two years if you plan to apply for other immigration applications in the future.
We are still reviewing all the information that was shared earlier this week by the Government of Canada to fully understand the specific impacts it may have on current and prospective international students at RRC Polytech.
