BECOME A CANADIAN PERMANENT RESIDENT

There are several ways to become a permanent resident – or immigrant – in Canada. Learn more about the most common processes that RRC Polytech graduates go through to obtain Canadian permanent residency.

1. THROUGH THE PROVINCE OF MANITOBA

MANITOBA PROVINCIAL NOMINEE PROGRAM

The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) selects international students, skilled workers and entrepreneurs from all over the world. The MPNP has many different streams of selection based on your current status and your goals.

One of the most common streams for international students is through the International Education Stream – which provides international students who graduated in Manitoba and whose skills meet the needs of industry, faster pathways to a nomination.
Another common stream for international students is the Skilled Worker in Manitoba Stream – which provides a point system that takes under consideration previous education and experience and, most importantly, a continued full-time job experience. This stream is also very common for international students’ spouses, who might be eligible for a work permit and gain the required work experience in Manitoba.

Meet the Eligibility Criteria

Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the MPNP. Eligibility criteria vary based on the stream you choose, but it generally involves assigning point values to education and work experience (among other factors) and selecting applicants based on a scoring system. Simulate your score >

Get Selected by the MPNP

The province might select you if you meet the criteria and have a high score (depending on the stream). If accepted, you will receive a Letter of Advice to Apply (LAA). You will then be required to provide supporting documentation at the time of submission.

Receive a Nomination Letter from the Province

If the selection and processing steps are successful, you’ll receive a Confirmation of Nomination letter from the province of Manitoba nominating you to become a permanent resident of Canada.

Apply for the Federal Process

Once you have your MPNP approval letter and any additional documentation, you’ll apply for your permanent residency (PR) through a federal process called “Permanent Residence: Provincial Nominees” (see the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada website). This process is different from the one in the next section (Express Entry).

Become a Canadian Permanent Resident

You will receive a file number with the instruction on next steps if IRCC accepts your application.

If your application is approved, you will receive a:

Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)
Permanent resident visa (if you’re from a country that requires a visa)

2. THROUGH THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA DIRECTLY

EXPRESS ENTRY

Another way to become a Canadian Permanent Resident is by applying directly with the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The IRCC has many different streams, but one of the most common processes is called Express Entry. The Express Entry assigns a point value to your education in Canada – among other criteria such as employment and age – and selects applicants based on total score.

Get Selected by the Express Entry

The Government of Canada may select you if your total score is higher than the minimum (which varies every draw). A Letter of Advice to Apply (LAA) will be issued if you are selected. You’ll be required to provide supporting documentation at the time of submission.

Become a Canadian Permanent Resident

If your application is approved, you will receive a:

Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)
A permanent resident visa (if you’re from a country that requires a visa)
