International Student Ambassador Reflection – Mehak Badhwar
Becoming and serving as an International Student Ambassador at Red River College Polytechnic is one of the crucial aspects that assisted me in learning and improving my abilities and inner self.
After careful consideration of numerous factors, I, Mehak Badhwar, have been selected as an International Student Ambassador. My motivation for taking this route stemmed from my observations of how frequently students, particularly immigrants, have problems like homesickness, cultural shock, and unstable mental health that they choose to keep to themselves. Having gone through similar challenges as an international student, I want to ease everyone’s journey by providing them with a home away from home. Furthermore, I knew that knowledge is not enough to survive in this cutthroat environment; one also needs to use networking techniques, excellent communication, ongoing learning, and a host of other skills. And undoubtedly this opportunity provides me with the chance of making it all true.
Throughout the journey, I coordinated many events with the help of other international student ambassadors and international student support centers, including sporting events, cultural awareness tours, zoo lighting, and more. This chance aids in my personal development as well. Since this opportunity is all about actively listening to and comprehending each other’s viewpoints, I have personally noticed a significant difference in my communication abilities. As a result, I now possess stronger leadership qualities; this has enabled me to comprehend the importance of taking on and fulfilling responsibilities. As I went along, I got to know a lot of individuals and delegates, each with their own unique perspectives and experiences, which broadened my perspective and enhanced my networking abilities. For me, ongoing education is the most crucial factor. I admit that I gained a lot of knowledge, including understanding of many cultures, being supportive of others, being self-assured, and more.
One of the major incidents from my personal experience was guiding future students during their orientation during panel discussions. It was an unrealistic moment for me; it has been wonderful, from listening to previous students sharing their experiences to sharing mine to assist their survival. Also, the Zoo Lights event was mesmerizing; learning about new cultures and celebrations was a wholesome experience.
Conclusively, it is only possible with the international student center, Parmeet Ghatoaura, and my team (Vishal, Tadi, and Phuong). It has been an extremely great and memorable experience for me. I have learned and grown a lot during this and came out as a stronger, better person.
