Social Insurance Number
The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a nine-digit number used in the administration of various Canadian government programs.
You will require a SIN to work in Canada or to receive government benefits. Apply in person at a Service Canada Centre.
When you apply, you must have the following original documents with you:
Work permit issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada
OR
Study permit issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada indicating that you are authorized to work in Canada.
- A study permit must indicate the permit holder “may accept employment” or “may work” in Canada; or
- A study permit and a “confirmation to work off campus” letter issued by IRCC.
If neither of these requirements is met, you must contact IRCC to verify if you are eligible to apply for a condition change or amended Study Permit.
