Protect Microsoft Office files with Restrict Access

NOTE: Restrict Access is best used in situations when you share information with internal recipients.

To share files with external recipients, encrypt them using the instructions on the following web pages:

Restrict Access can be used with Microsoft Office files, including Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. These directions are shown using a Microsoft Word document as the example.

  1. Open the Word document where you would like to use Restrict Access.
  2. Click File.
  3. Click Info.
  4. Click Protect Document, and then click one of these available options.
    1. Unrestricted Access is open permissions for anyone to read, copy, or share the document. This is the default.

    2. Restricted Access is to provide either Read only permission or Change permission.

    3. Red River College – Confidential is for internal use only but cannot be copied and printed.
