Visit the Forks Market on the last weekend of January and you could come away with a piece of original art, created on site by Red River College graphic design students.

The tenth annual Student Art Show & Auction is being held at the Forks Market centre court on Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29. Attendees can watch approximately 50 RRC students create original works of art using a variety of drawing and painting techniques.

A live auction, hosted by Jon Ljungberg, will take place from 2-5pm on the 29th. Proceeds from the event will benefit Winnipeg Harvest and the Red River College Graphic Design Student’s Graduation Fund.

Just in time for the holiday season, Red River College students in the Creative Communications program are putting their skills to good use by holding a radiothon in support of the Christmas Cheer Board today. “Kickin in for Christmas Cheer” will be broadcast on the campus radio station, 92.9 KICK FM from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“The students are entirely responsible for promoting, producing and being on-air during the radiothon on Thursday,” says Red River College’s radio instructor, Dan Vadeboncoeur. “Creative Communications gives the students the skills they need to put on events like this and I am extremely proud of how far they’ve come since the beginning of the program.”

Students will have hampers set up at both the Exchange District and Notre Dame Campuses on Thursday, and are inviting students and the public to bring a non-perishable food item or a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the Christmas Cheer Board.

Congratulations go out to the nine students in Red River College’s Animal Health Technology program who received the following awards, scholarships and bursaries after completing the program’s first year:

• Julie Edmonds: First Year Performance Award (worth $250; awarded to a student who demonstrates academic proficiency and technical abilities during their first year of studies).
• Rachel Harms: Manitoba Animal Health Technologist Association Award (worth $200; awarded to the AHT student with the highest academic standing after completion of their first year).
• Sophie Rey: Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association Bursary (worth $300; awarded after completion of first year).
• Kendall Young: Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association Scholarship (worth $300; awarded after completion of first year).
• Marnie Elgar: Purina Student Achievement Award (worth $500; awarded by Nestle Purina PetCare to the overall top student in both skills and academics following completion of first year, and completion of the “Daily Nutrition Matters” online course.)
• Cynthia Tonn & Susan Hepburn: Barbara Nagler Memorial Bursary (worth $1,750 and $1,250, respectively; awarded to AHT students with a demonstrated financial need and volunteer spirit, who complete first year with a minimum 3.0 GPA).
• Heather Mays & Vanessa Geirnaert: Sophie Katarynych Award (worth $600 each; awarded to two AHT students who demonstrate financial need and academic success after first year).

Red River College’s Rebels athletes played mentor to junior high school students from across the province over the weekend, at a volleyball tournament and skills camp aimed at further strengthening our teams’ ties to the community.

At the second annual Rebels Boys Classic, held Nov. 5th and 6th at the College’s Notre Dame Campus, teams from 11 junior high schools throughout Manitoba took part in a combined tourney and skills clinic led by athletes on RRC’s Rebels Men’s Volleyball team.

A similar event — the Rebels Girls Classic — was held two weekends prior, drawing players from 14 junior high girls teams throughout the province.

For decades, mechanical engineering technology has been something of a male-dominated field. But with more and more women now entering the field, enrolment at Red River is reflective of the changing times.

“What’s really unusual about this is I don’t think we’ve had more than about five female graduates in this program — ever,” says Kathy Davis, Technical Communication instructor and co-op coordinator for RRC’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program.

“And now we have nine women enrolled between first and third year. And they’re all doing well, despite the fact that they’re in a tough program, and despite the fact one of them has a very young daughter, another is fresh out of high school, one has English as a second language issues, and another is working full time. How they’re doing it, I don’t know!”

While she’s careful to point out that many of the program’s male students face similar pressures, Davis says it’s great to see more young women currently enrolled, since it suggests a reversal of a decades-old trend in which women have avoided the field in favour of civil or electrical engineering technology. Red River College students led the way for a Manitoba delegation that earned the highest number of gold medals at the recently held 17^th Canadian Skills Competition in Quebec City. The annual Skills Canada National event took place from June 1 to 4.

Team Manitoba received a total of 24 medals, including 13 Gold, 5 Silver, and 6 Bronze. The teams from Ontario and Quebec each earned 10 Gold medals, while the Alberta and British Columbia delegations each finished with 7 Gold.

Of the Team Manitoba medals, Red River College students won 4 Gold, 2 Silver, and 3 Bronze:

Red River College celebrated the achievements of its Aboriginal graduates at the College's 11th Annual Graduation Pow Wow.

Hosted by RRC's School of Indigenous Education, the event (held May 6, 2011), drew more than 800 graduates, family members and friends.

On June 3, 2011, the SIE will host the College's first ever Aboriginal Art Auction, in support of Aboriginal-focused programming for students. Tickets will be sold until June 2, 2011, at both the Notre Dame Campus and Exchange District Campus bookstores.

Students of Red River College's Graphic Design program gave their industry peers an eyeful last week, displaying the products of their individual visions at the 2011 Creative Arts Open House.

Held May 5, 2011, at the Exchange District Campus, the event allowed students, graduates and industry representatives to enjoy an evening of accomplished design work produced by students in RRC's Graphic Design, Graphic Design Advanced, Digital Multimedia Technology, and 3D Computer Graphics programs.

The evening's festivities were bolstered by presentations from two guest speakers: Toronto-based graphic designer Louis Fishauf — who's created logos and brands for such companies as Roots, Molson Breweries and Toronto Life — and cartooning legend Ralph Bakshi, creator of such cult favourites as Fritz the Cat, American Pop, and the animated version of The Lord of the Rings.
