Red River College students were the dominant force at last week’s Skills Manitoba Skills Competition, sweeping the gold, silver and bronze medal categories in a number of post-secondary contests.

All told, RRC students earned 15 gold, 14 silver, and 15 bronze medals, for a total of 44. (Competitors Winnipeg Technical College and Assiniboine Community College both took home 14 medals each.)

The event was held April 12, 2012, at Red River College. Over 475 high school, post-secondary, and apprentice students competed in 42 skilled trades and technology contests in six industry sectors. Read More →

Red River College’s annual industry night/open house for graphic design will be held on Thursday, May 3. It will be an opportunity to view the work of talented students in the Graphic Design, Advanced Graphic Design, Digital Media Design and 3D Computer Graphics programs.

Some services, including online registration, will be temporarily unavailable while RRC’s Information Technology Solutions department conducts server upgrades on Thursday, April 19th at 11:30am.

This process is expected to take approximately one hour, and will affect the following online student services:

• Program and Course Information
• Case Log Systems
• Online Registration
• Parking – Student Service Centre staff will be unable to process parking requests while upgrades are being completed.

All other systems, including e-mail, Learn, Student Portal and WebAdvisor will not be affected.

A trio of Red River College grads have teamed up to launch a new company that could soon become the leading distributor of specialty foods in Central Canada.

Chris Boreski (Business Administration, 2004), Wayne Doerksen (Red Seal Chef, 2001), and Brennan Taniguchi (Business Administration, 2010) are the driving forces behind World Wise Distribution, a new Winnipeg-based company that was launched to meet the growing demand among retailers and restaurants for natural, organic, gluten-free, kosher, vegan, locally-grown and other specialty food products.

“It’s a great feeling to see the amazing reaction from our wholesale customers when they see our wide assortment of products,” says Boreski, operations manager at World Wise Distribution. “They know they can purchase them here — from a local company.”

Cindy Blackstock, Executive Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada, will speak at Red River College’s Notre Dame Campus today, March 29, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., in the Black Lecture Theatre.

Blackstock, who’s also an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, will speak on the topic of Culture + Equity + You = Hope for First Nations Children.

“Now is the moment when caring Canadians are needed the most,” says Blackstock. “We know just what to do to make a big difference in (the lives of) First Nations children and families.”

Blackstock, a member of the Gitksan Nation, has worked in the field of child and family services for over 20 years. The author of more then 50 publications, Blackstock’s key interests include exploring and addressing the causes of disadvantage for Aboriginal children and families by promoting equitable and culturally-based interventions.

Red River College’s Online Safety and Health Orientation program has earned an Excellence in Leadership Award from the Human Resource Management Association of Manitoba (HRMAM).

The College received the Organizational Health & Safety Award at the HRMAM’s 10th Annual Excellence in Leadership Awards Gala, held March 14, 2012, at the Victoria Inn. A number of RRC departments were involved in the creation and implementation of the online orientation program, including the Teaching Learning Technology Centre (TLTC), I.T. Solutions, Environmental Health and Safety Services, and Human Resources.

“Through an innovative training application of an ‘Online Safety and Health Orientation’ — which was deemed essential/required learning — new and existing employees are provided with important baseline safety information that helps them carry out their duties and responsibilities,” says Nancy Alexander, Vice-President, Human Resource Services & Sustainability at RRC.

“The program was launched in December 2009, and over 80% of permanent employees have completed the training, with all new employees completing within their first 10 days of employment.”

Red River College graphic design instructor Randall Butterfield spent time in Scotland and France in recent years. A series of his paintings, which depict the European landscapes he observed, is on display at the Fleet Galleries from March 12 – 30.

Creative Communications student Daniella Ponticelli and Hannah, a dog who had to have a leg amputated and an eye removed before being adopted.

Students from Red River College’s Creative Communications program are putting their talents to good use in support of the Winnipeg Humane Society this weekend.

On Sunday, March 18, 2012, CreComm students will produce and host the “IAMS 1001 Donations” telethon, airing live on Shaw TV from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The second-year students — representing all four streams of the CreComm program (journalism, advertising, public relations and broadcasting) — have already produced a series of pre-recorded pieces that will air during the telethon, and will also serve as technical crew and on-air talent while broadcasting live from the Humane Society on Sunday.

“Our students are extremely talented, and this telethon will give them a well-deserved opportunity to showcase those talents and help a great cause at the same time,” says CreComm instructor Joanne Kelly, a former Shaw TV producer and on-air personality.

“We are always looking for opportunities for the students to gain real-life experience so they will be that much more prepared for the workforce upon graduation. This telethon also helps teach them the value of being connected to your community, and how important it is to give back.”
