Prepare for the future of work with continuing education at RRC Polytech

Part-time and Online Education

Online Education Delivery Methods

Our online education courses are delivered in a variety of formats. Below is a list of acronyms and definitions that explain how we bring education to you.

BL – Blended Learning

Blended learning combines face-to-face instruction with online learning in delivering a course, program, or micro-credential. Blended learning can also provide training sessions, workshops and other learning opportunities.

CP – Clinical Practice

Clinical practices provide opportunities for supervised practice in College arranged health care settings. This allows learners to integrate theory with care of clients. Teaching and supervision are provided. Clinical practices are scheduled as appropriate clinical sites are available.

Some health related programs include a clinical practice. Clinical practices are arranged by the College on an individual basis following successful completion of the program’s theory courses.

EL – Elluminate

Elluminate is a form of continuing education done live or virtual through distance delivery. Join students in real time from other RRC Polytech Regional Campuses and throughout Manitoba. This is live and very interactive learning with a college instructor.

FP – Practicum and Field Placements

For programs involving field work practicums etc., placements can’t be guaranteed as spaces are limited and available on a fluctuating basis. There may be a waiting period.

LN – LEARN

LEARN is a web-based learning management system (LMS) for the delivery of online teaching and learning. Students will use the tools within LEARN to access the course content, link to resources, communicate with the instructor and other students and to submit assignments.

Some courses have chat rooms, some have class mail lists and some have a discussion board. You will access your course on the web, using your College user name and password. Additional information is included in all applicable course packages.

PR – Print Materials

Receive printed materials, modules, class notes and readings if applicable.

Self-directed or Term Courses

Online Learning courses are available on either a self-directed enrollment or a term basis. In course descriptions, courses are identified as either Self-directed or Term.

Self-Directed courses have monthly starts (with a few exceptions) and must be completed within the specified time period. The time frame begins on the first of the month and ends on the date specified on your Registration Statement. Time frames vary from one month to six months (see courses). However, you may complete a course sooner.

Many courses are available on a Term basis and must be completed by the specified date. Most Term courses are either online or involve teleconferencing and telephone tutoring. Term courses have a given start and end date in fall, winter, or spring terms. Some term courses are offered on a cyclical basis such as once a year. Students are encouraged to register for those courses when offered. Term courses are not eligible for an extension.

SL – Skills Lab

Several programs include a Skills Lab component to provide a setting to practice and demonstrate skills learned prior to taking the Clinical Practice. Skills Labs, conducted at the Notre Dame Campus, are offered when there is a sufficient enrollment or as specified in the course schedule.

SP – SharePoint

This is an easy to use web-based collaboration tool for peer-to-peer work, small group work and instructor-to-student communication. Documents such as modules or compacs and course outlines are available on the SharePoint site. You will be required to login, using your academic domain (e.g. academic\username) and the same password as you use for all College resources. Additional information is included in all applicable course packages.

TB – Textbooks

Online Education students are required to purchase required textbooks and materials from the Campus Store. To confirm textbook information, please visit the Campus Store.

In some instances, one textbook can be used for two or more courses.

TC – Teleconference Courses

Teleconference courses are offered on a term basis only. Terms usually begin in September, January, and April. Teleconference courses must be completed by the end of the term. Teleconference courses are run with groups of students. They have minimum and maximum enrollments. Students are registered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Classes are conducted over the telephone using a teleconference bridge that enables the instructor and students to speak to and hear each other. To access the bridge, you dial a toll-free number and enter a pass code. Each course includes a series of one-hour, one-and-one-half-hour, or two-hour teleconference classes.

For teleconference courses, you receive printed materials and, in most cases, a textbook. Some include videotapes. You study the materials in preparation for the teleconference sessions, do assignments, and write exams.

TT – Telephone Tutoring

For many courses, the instructor provides each student with a certain amount of one-on-one telephone tutoring.

VS – Video Streaming

Video Streaming is live and interactive learning delivered by a college instructor. Live classroom sessions are streamed over the internet. Students join the instructor in real time following the course schedule. Sessions may be recorded.

VT – Videotape/DVD

Videos listed in your course package are available from RRC Polytech. Call, e-mail or fax us your request. Or, drop into our office. Videos must be returned within one week and cannot be renewed.

Some courses may include videotapes or DVD’s to augment course material.

WC – Webcam

Some online exams require the use of the Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) and a webcam to ensure compliance with RRC Polytech’s Academic Integrity Policy (S4). The software installs on your computer (sorry, not your phone or tablet) and helps to protect against cheating to keep things fair. Details on whether or not your course requires the use of LDB will be in your course outline.
