Recipe for success: After-school culinary training gives teens a head start in the kitchen

March 1, 2017

When Jevon Thompson first moved to Winnipeg from Jamaica in the middle of winter, there were some big adjustments for him to make. One of those was the cuisine.

Thompson didn’t have much of an appetite for Canadian dishes and even the Caribbean ingredients available at local markets didn’t taste quite the same.

Already self-reliant in the kitchen, he began experimenting with creative takes on that staple of the Canadian teenage diet – mac and cheese.

So it was a natural fit when – while exploring various extra-curricular options presented to him by his English teacher – he decided to apply for Red River College’s After School Leaders Culinary Training Program.

“It was something I enjoyed, something I wanted to reach further into,” says Thompson, 18. “I met this chef once on a plane and he was talking to me about it and it sounded really exciting. So learning to further my skills caught my attention.” Read More →

CE student teams with local chefs (and RRC grads) in support of Winnipeg Harvest

January 30, 2017

Leane Funk is using her good taste to fight hunger.

Funk, a professional server and Red River College Continuing Education student, is one of the foodies behind the Winnipeg Supper Club, a regularly occurring secret dinner event.

On Sat., Feb. 25, the Winnipeg Supper Club is teaming up with Winnipeg Harvest to present Harvest Homegrown, a not-so secret, collaborative dinner event. Harvest Homegrown will take place at Winnipeg Harvest (1085 Winnipeg Ave.) and will feature local food prepared by Deseo chef Jordan Carlson and MasterChef Canada runner-up Jeremy Senaris, both of whom are Red River College graduates.

Harvest Homegrown will raise money for Winnipeg Harvest and its hunger-fighting initiatives.

“It just so happened that six months ago, David Northcott (Winnipeg Harvest executive director) ended up at a table I was serving and we just started chatting,” says Funk. “I mentioned who I was and he had heard of (Winnipeg Supper Club). One thing led to another and we discussed starting something together. Then I went and met with Colleen McVarish (Harvest development manager) and now we’re doing a dinner.”

Funk is excited for dinner guests to see Carlson and Senaris in action.

“I thought with their contrasting cooking styles they would be a good collaboration,” she says. “It’s a pretty open kitchen and we have a chef’s table that is available for purchase for a group of 10. It’s available at a bit of a premium but they’ll be front row, watching the chefs and being served by Jeremy and Jordan.” Read More →

Our Human Resource Management Certificate now an accredited program

November 16, 2016

hrmamAs of today, Red River College is one of four post-secondary institutions in Manitoba to offer a human resources training program recognized with a CPHR (Chartered Professional in Human Resources) designation from the Human Resource Management Association of Manitoba (HRMAM).

Graduates of these programs— in RRC’s case, the Human Resource Management Certificate offered through the School of Continuing Education — will be one step closer to receiving their professional designation upon graduation and will be able to waive writing the National Knowledge Exam (NKE).

The NKE is a required step for many pursing their CPHR designation, which is the national industry standard of excellence for those working in the field of HR. The CPHR designation requires an individual to achieve and maintain demonstrated competency and experience relevant to the HR profession

“Red River College works in partnership with industry to provide relevant and timely programming that prepares our students to transition from college to career to meet the evolving demands in the workplace,” said Jo-Anne Shay, Dean, School of Continuing Education, Red River College. “Accrediting our HR Management program opens doors to many career opportunities for our students, and provides industry with the necessary talent to make a real impact in their organizations.”

Earlier this year HRMAM and CPHR Canada announced new enhancements to the CPHR designation, which included an option that allows graduates of accredited programs to waive writing the NKE as one of the requirements as well as introducing non-degree paths to attaining the CPHR.

“Incorporating post-secondary training into the CPHR designation is an important step in advancing the designation and providing greater value for the business community,” said Ron Gauthier, CEO of HRMAM.
