Bike Week Winnipeg starts Monday, June 17th and goes all week in celebration of riding bikes, in Winnipeg! To kick off a full week of events, The Sustainability Office is excited to be back at Omand’s Creek during Bike to Work Day for the 3rd year in a row! Pit Stops will be set up around the City to offer repairs, treats and activities to cyclists on their way to work.

Staff must authenticate at the device to release their print job
In May 2018, the Print Optimization Working Group (POWG) implemented the Print Release feature on College Xerox devices – aka “Swipe to Release”. This feature required all staff to login at the device to release their print jobs after sending them to the print queue. There were two main reasons for the implementation of this feature:
1. Security: Releasing your print job at the device means no more “print and sprint” to make sure you get to the printer to retrieve confidential documents as soon as they come out of the printer. This feature helps to ensure that printed documents, especially those with confidential information, are not inadvertently seen or retrieved by other parties.
We already have 172 commuters signed up for Commuter Challenge 2019! Last year we had a total of 175, and we want to beat it! all you have to do is sign up here, use sustainable transportation for the week (and beyond), and log your commutes from June 2nd-June 8th!
Commuter Challenge is a national event that brings attention to the significance of transportation emissions on our environment, and highlights the physical and mental benefits of active transportation. This challenge gives you the opportunity to try something new, reduce your personal carbon footprint, get some physical activity, fresh air, and save money! In addition, there are a ton of great prizes waiting to be won. To celebrate, we are hosting some events next week that you wont want to miss:

Summer is finally on it’s way! You may be getting amped-up for beach days and drinks on the patio, but before you go into out-of-office mode let’s make sure the College’s electronic equipment and appliances are getting a much needed energy break.
In our 2018 Plug Load Inventory, we learned that there are many academic offices that are vacant over the summer months. That’s a lot of potential for unnecessary energy consumption, either through leaving items and lights on, or through standby (phantom) power that many electronic items draw even when turned off. But you can help! By participating in the Summer Seasonal Shutdown Office Challenge your actions can help to achieve energy savings. Plus… by participating you could win a catered coffee break for your office. Simply complete the checklist by June 30, 2019, perform the actions before you leave and you will be entered in the prize draw.
RED Forum is one of our favourite days of the year. Not only do we get to meet and engage with people from around the College, but there is always something new and interesting to do and learn.
Large events can have large environmental impacts which is why we have partnered with RED Forum to help make it greener. Planning an event with a small environmental footprint can be hard without the right tools and resources to help you. We’ll be launching a Green Event Guide soon to help you green your College event, but in the meantime our partnership with RED Forum is a great opportunity to not only demonstrate the College’s commitment to sustainability but to also showcase some of the ways to help make any event a little greener.

Earth Day is a worldwide event to celebrate and show appreciation for our planet, and demonstrate support for a sustainable tomorrow. Since it’s the only Earth we’ve got, let’s celebrate for more than just one day. Power down at work and home for Earth Hour.
Take part in Earth Hour 2019 and help us in shine a light on climate change. Take the pledge and join millions of people around the world in powering down lights and electronics for one hour on Saturday, March 30 from 8:30 – 9:30PM local time.

Red River College is closed from December 21 to January 2. During this time the College’s major building systems will run in “Un-Occupied Mode”, which means lower temperatures and, in most cases, minimal ventilation. We’re pleased to announce that the Plug Load Inventory is now complete! Our small team traveled around the College over the last few months, poking our heads into offices and staff common areas and taking note of all items powered by means of an AC outlet. Now we begin the hard work of creating and implementing impactful programs to help us reduce our environmental and financial footprints and to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment for us all.
