Manitoba Water and Wastewater Training
Water and Wastewater Operator and Certification Training Courses
Throughout the year, RRC Polytech offers a series of four and five-day courses designed for basic operator training, and as exam preparation for writing the provincial Water and Wastewater (W & WW) Operator Certification exams.
Online Courses – Fall 2024 and Winter 2025
All fall and winter Water and Wastewater operator training / certification exam prep courses will be offered online through interactive alternative delivery. This adaptive delivery will be online through RRC Polytech’s learning management system (LEARN), entailing approximately 50% voice-over PowerPoint presentations and video resources, and 50% interactive sessions through WebEx with the course instructor.
Participants are required to have access to a computer and high-speed internet from 8:00am – 4:30pm for each day of the course. As with our face-to-face courses, some self-study is required outside these time frames. Access to the material on LEARN will be available for three weeks past the course finish date, as exams do not always directly follow the course.
Classroom/In-person Delivery – Spring 2025
RRC Polytech will offer in-person Operator training / Certification exam preparation courses in spring 2025. In-person course fees include: printed class handouts, morning and afternoon coffee breaks, and parking.
The Foundations course and the Class 1 courses will be delivered at RRC Polytech’s Notre Dame Campus located at 2055 Notre Dame Ave, Winnipeg.
Class 2 and 3 will include hands-on components and will be delivered at RRC Polytech’s Interlake Campus and at the City of Selkirk Treatment Plant.
Note: The CEUs credited from Manitoba Environment and Climate Change are the same for RRC Polytech’s in-person and online training.
You must register for the exam separately through Manitoba Environment and Climate Change. See the Exams section below for more information.
Exams
The associated certification exams are available to be written in person at 215 Garry Street (Ricoh Plaza), Winnipeg, unless otherwise noted. Limited seats are also available in Brandon and other Manitoba locations upon request. The listed fees are for the RRC Polytech course only; you must register for the exam separately through Manitoba Environment and Climate Change.
The certification exams are administered by Manitoba Environment and Climate Change; not RRC Polytech.

This short online seminar will present an overview of Trenchless Technologies currently being implemented in the industry, with a focus on Cured-in-Place pipe (CIPP) lining. It will cover all aspects of pipe rehabilitation projects, many of which are common to some or all the technologies. This course will also suggest methodologies for planning, tendering, and executing lining programs including selecting appropriate liner systems. CIPP has been implemented throughout the world for over 50 years and with Climate Change advancing and infrastructure aging, the need for such Trenchless Technologies is becoming more and more vital in the water and wastewater industry.

This introductory course covers the foundational skills and knowledge operators require for success when writing ABC certification exams. This course is recommended, but optional, prior to taking a Class 1 certification exam preparation course. Industry related Math and Science (chemistry, microbiology, hydraulics and electricity), Safety / Administration / Management, and Equipment / Support systems are all gone over in detail, relative to certification exam requirements. There is no exam for this course.
Who should take the Foundations Course? RRC Polytech has developed a diagnostic quiz designed to objectively assess an individual’s fundamental skill set that will be required for effective participation in a Certification Exam Preparation Course. All individuals that have not taken the Foundations Course in the past or have not successfully passed a Water and Wastewater Certification exam should complete the quiz. This course is intended for operator training and/or as preparation for the Manitoba Wastewater Treatment Class III Certification Exam. Topics include: an overview of Foundations material, Wastewater Treatment Class I and II, WW characteristics / Parameters / Guidelines, Lagoons, Mechanical treatment processes, Sludge handling / Digestion / Dewatering / Disposal, Odor control, UV / Chlorination, Lab equipment / Testing / Sampling, Nutrient removal, digestion, wastewater microbiology, sludge dewatering, biosolids sludge handling management techniques, and Wastewater Treatment III mathematical calculations. Students will work in a Class III Wastewater Treatment Plant where they will get hands-on training with equipment, laboratory, wastewater treatment and optimization. Students will go over current provincial and federal regulations for wastewater and learn how to navigate through environmental act licenses.

Onsite Wastewater Management (Septic Field Installation)
Note: The Onsite Wastewater Management (Septic Field Installation) curriculum for Manitoba is currently undergoing development and no training is offered in the province at this time.
Those wishing to become certified practitioners in Manitoba may participate in the Onsite Wastewater Practitioner Training Program offered through either the Alberta Onsite Wastewater Management Association or the Saskatchewan Onsite Wastewater Management Association.
